A What's In-Store favorite, The Alternate Routes is coming out with new album, Nothing More. We recently saw them perform an amazing acoustic set at the Sprint event, then 24-hours later plugged in with full band when they cruised through Los Angeles. See what they've been up on tour and what the holidays will bring for them.
How has the tour been so far? Any stories, mishaps or anecdotes you’d like to share?
This has been a fun year on the road. We have been at this for a little while, and we are trying to get a little smarter about touring. We don't say yes to every single thing we are offered. We try to be a bit more selective and try to focus on getting better as a band, and not necessarily just playing more shows. It can definitely make me antsy at times, but I think it has been a good strategy.
Congrats on your Christmas EP, It’s That Time. What inspired you guys to write it, and how will you be spending the holidays this season?
I think Tim and I have both always been a sucker for Christmas music, and giving ourselves permission to try and write some was fun. It all came together very quickly. I think this will be a quiet Christmas touring wise. Spend some time with our families. Tim and his wife will be celebrating their first Christmas with their son James. And my wife and I are expecting our first child right around then. It definitely promises to be an exciting time!
Nobody Else is about letting go of that human impulse to compare yourself to others and keep up with what others are doing. Given your amazing success … have you moved on from that?
I wish I could say I have, but it is always a work in progress. Coming to that realization was definitely the motivation behind writing the song, but it is easier said than done. I think as an artist (and as a person) looking around you and seeing what others are doing and letting it get to you is a common trap. One of these days ...
What has been your favorite city you’ve toured in, and why? (Favorite restaurants, venues, etc.)
I would say Nashville is my favorite home away from home. We have made so many great friendships there other the years, and I like it more every time I am there.
"Nothing More” was written for charity organization, Newton Kindness (www.newtownkindness.org). Tell us about the cause and how you got involved.
Newtown Kindness is a wonderful organization whose mission is to recognize and reward acts of kindness in children. We were approached by a friend who worked for Newtown Kindness and she asked for a short instrumental track for their website. After learning a little bit about the organization, we thought we could do a little better than that. We wrote Nothing More and it has really changed our lives. It is a funny thing to say about one of your own songs, but we feel lucky to be a part of it.
