Tremble is a Los Angeles-based electronica trio that features front-woman Kelly Sweet and instrumentalists Haywire and Ajax (yes, those are real instruments you hear, not computer generated sounds). Their independent debut single, “Illumination,” is getting in-store airplay at 6,200 Indie AC stores across the country, and What's In-Store Music is proud to be a part of this exciting and authentic project. Here’s Kelly’s answers to our five questions, followed by the usual shameless plug.
The three of you come from very different musical backgrounds. Tell us how you met and decided to form the group.
We all happened to be at a music industry event last year in L.A., hosted by Eric Vetro. He is the voice coach for bands like Muse and basically every major pop star out there. The three of us randomly started talking and realized that we shared a lot of the same musical influences and interests. Plus we discovered that, coincidentally, we all grew up in the Boston area, moving out to L.A. at different times to pursue music. Anyway, the three of us got together the very next day at this funky little studio in the Valley, really just to see what would happen. We ended up writing our first song in like a couple of hours and quickly realized that we were on to something.
Where does the name Tremble come from?
I love the writings of Khalil Gibran. One day I read this passage from one of his books and was talking about it with the guys:
"We were a silent, hidden thought in the folds of oblivion, and we have become a voice that causes the heavens to tremble."
We thought that Tremble would be the perfect band name!
Who are your musical influences?
We listen to and absorb so much music from all different eras and styles. And I think that's part of what makes our sound unique. We were initially inspired by the trip-hop sound of Massive Attack and Portishead. We also love alternative, hip-hop, electronic music from the ‘80s and ‘90s, bands like Depeche Mode, Blondie and Garbage, for example. And there are some artists right now making great music. For instance, we love James Blake and Banks.
Your new single “Illumination” is out now. Tell us about the song and what it’s all about.
“Illumination” is about escaping from a bad relationship. You realize that your partner is not at all who he says he is. And then you get that moment of clarity, that flash of "illumination,” and you are finally living your truth, being free.
What are your plans for 2016?
We are looking forward to releasing our first EP in January. It'll be called "In The Chaos." We also shot several music videos that we can't wait to share with everyone. And then we will bring the Tremble sound to the live arena.
Shameless plug time … go for it.
Our new single "Illumination" is our very first commercial release! It is now available worldwide on all the streaming and download sites. Plus it just got licensed for the MTV show, “Finding Carter.” So check it out (Airing November 10th).
