If you were at SXSW you may have caught the awesome new duo, Coast Modern. They've recently signed up with What's In-Store Music and are getting some serious impressions already!
How did the two of you meet and when did you decide to form a duo?
We were both working as songwriters for other artists in L.A., but it wasn’t until Coleman left on an unexpected soul-searching trip to Denver that we realized we could make music for ourselves on our own terms. Back in L.A. we got together with the only goal to make things that excited us, and Coast Modern was born.
I love your single, “Hollow Life.” It’s got a fresh new sound … totally catchy. How would you describe your musical style?
Thanks! Our sound is very free-spirited and not too overthought. It’s full of ideas we wrestle with in real life and sounds that inspire us in the moment. It’s like barefoot long boarding on the boardwalk with a green smoothie and a 10-foot pet python wrapped around you.
You recently played at SXSW, and it looks like you had a blast. What were some of the highlights?
SXSW is crazy music spring break. We actually played our first show ever as Coast Modern, which was a chaotic and amazing way to introduce ourselves in the live world. We also caught a 1 a.m. set from Empress Of that blew us away. Eating way too much BBQ at Salt Lick and jumping off a cliff into Barton Creek have to be on the list too.
If you could open for anyone (living or deceased) who would you choose and why?
Might have to be David Bowie (RIP). I’ve always admired his ability to completely be “himself” and inspire people to think outside of conventional expectations. Plus his music is badass and I never got to see him play live.
I’d love to hear more music from you guys! Are you currently recording?
We’re in the studio all the time writing and recording almost simultaneously. Lots more music to come.
Shameless Plug: What would you like our readers to know about you?
We have two songs out that you can get down to right now (Hollow Life and Animals), and a few more trickling out soon. Might be an album in the mix around summer too. We’re also pumped to play a few dates with Børns and tour with the Wombats this summer! Let’s hang out.
