L.A. based singer-songwriter Will Jay has had some amazing experiences in his musical career so far -- from being a part of the band, IM5 to embarking on a solo career ... he was even a contestant on China's The Voice! We're excited to see what else is in store for this talented artist!
When did you start writing and performing music?
I started performing at a very young age. I took any chance to be on stage, whether it was musical theatre, piano competitions or choir. Technically, I started writing songs at 11, however the first song I would dare play anyone I wrote when I was 16, so let's just say I started writing then!
What was it like going from being a part of a group – IM5 – to a solo artist?
Making the transition from being part of a group to a solo act was definitely a challenge at first. I joined IM5 when I was 13 and left when I was 18. Not only were those were some pretty formative years, but being in a band was my first taste of the industry and it was all I knew. Suddenly being on my own was liberating in the sense that my opinion was the only opinion now and creatively I could finally pursue the music I'd always wanted to make. That being said, I definitely had to learn how to handle myself onstage without four other people by my side.
You were on China’s The Voice. What was that experience like and how does the show differ from ours in the States?
Being on The Voice in China was a whirlwind. I had no idea the amount of work that went into every performance and how much the contestants get put through. There were even a couple of days we filmed for 24 hours straight! Interestingly, joining the show and having all artistic control stripped from me only cemented in my mind what kind of artist I want to be. I can talk about the craziness from the show all day, however I can imagine the American version of The Voice isn't much different.
You’re quite the mash up artist. Your Best of Coldplay mash up is INSANE. What has been the response from your fans, and has Coldplay heard it?
Thank you! As far as I know, Coldplay hasn't heard it ... hopefully one day because that would be incredible. People seem to really like the mashups I make. For me, it's creating content in a creative way that's unique to me. Also, it's really fun for me to take an artist I look up to and fit all of their greatest hits into a 3-minute mashup like puzzle pieces.
Any plans for new mash ups in the future or will you be working on more original material like your single, “Gentleman?”
Right now, the focus is on original material. I've got a 5-song EP coming out in May and a 30-date US tour shortly after. That being said, there will always be great artists to make mashups for. Who knows, maybe if the original music works out I can show these artists myself!
Shameless Plug: What would you like our readers to know about you?
I would like the readers to know that I have a new single and video out for "Gentleman" (below) and it would mean the world if you could like and share the video with everyone you know! (family, friends, the mailman). Also, thanks for reading!
