What's In-Store music client Ashley J is as focused and driven as they come. Her single, "Dare Ya" is racking up the in-store impressions and I "Dare Ya" to get in this talented singer-songwriter's way.
1. Music has always been a big part of your life. What is your earliest music memory and what event or events made you realize that you were meant to make music?
AJ: My whole life I can remember it being related to music. I think deep down we know our destiny it’s just the matter if we make the move to jump on it. I distinctly remember when I was a kid my mom would buy me whatever album was popular at the time and I would sit in my room listening it to play over and over until I memorized every word to every song. (Not realizing that the cover jacket usually had the lyrics printed there.) I was naïve, but I threw a concert every night on my karaoke machine no matter who came.
My first concert was a Nelson (sons of the late Ricky Nelson) concert. It was at Disney’s Epcot Flower and Garden show concert series. I’ll never forget how they moved across the stage, and how mesmerized I was. I made my folks watch every set, every day they played. I even got to meet them every year for three years straight. It was that moment, watching them play, I knew music was for me.
2. Congrats on your recent college graduation. If you weren’t pursuing a career in music, what other career path(s) might you follow?
AJ: Thank you! I’m a longtime fan of Dr. G Medical Examiner, and I always thought if music didn’t work out, then I would become a coroner. I love a good mystery and I like to get my hands dirty.
But I ended up pursuing Business Law in College, because I have always wanted to own my record label. Therefore in turn, everything always has related to music and has become full circle in my life. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
3. What was your inspiration behind your latest single, “Dare Ya?”
AJ: “Dare Ya” is such a special song to me. I wrote the song based off of a series of text messages sent to me by someone close and special to me. The text messages I saved inspire me, motivate me, and remind me of who I am. Incorporating them was the best way I could show my appreciation for those messages and how they make me feel on daily basis just by reading them and receiving them.
4. If you could record a duet with anyone (living or deceased) who would be your top 3 choices?
AJ: Justin Timberlake, Johnny Cash, and a hard tie between Bruno Mars and Sam Hunt.
5. What will the next few months hold for you? Touring? Recording?
AJ: The next few months will be filled with a ton of touring and some major writing. I just got done recording quite a bundle of material, and I’m preparing for my next bundle. I’m constantly writing and jotting down ideas and memories I will write about. I’m always prepping for step 10 even if I’m only step 5.
Shameless plug: What would you like our readers to know about you?
AJ: I’m a dog lover, and I love to garden in my spare time. I’m obsessed with cooking and all things recipes. I enjoy being outdoors, running hiking, etc. I’m a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and my favorite number is 23. I’m the most confident when I’m dressed up and sassy, but I’m not shy or afraid to get dirty and hang with the boys. I’m extremely versatile and a woman of many hats! But most importantly, music is the only place in the world I feel like I fit in. And being able to strive in the industry is a dream turned reality, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
