Artist Spotlight: SYML

Seattle-native, Brian Fennell is SYML, a new What's In-Store Music client and one of those artists you just can't get enough of. "Where's My Love" is getting in-store play across the country and if life were a movie, it would make one heck of a soundtrack.

What is the meaning/definition of SYML and how does it relate to your music?

Syml means “simple” in Welsh. I was adopted as a baby and learned about my heritage later in life. Turns out I’m mostly Welsh by blood. In my experience, some of the most objectively beautiful things are painfully simple. SYML serves as a reminder to keep things simple when I create music.

When did you start playing music and who were your influences?

I played piano at a young age, which grew into a love for many instruments. When I was younger I was surrounded by the music of my parents. Tom Petty, Simon and Garfunkel, and The Beach Boys continue to be influential to me. Over the years I have weaved between genres, but the unifying thread is my love of the pop song.

You’ve had great success with TV and film placements. Where can we hear some of your work currently?

Most recently SYML has had placements in shows like The Royals, Conviction, Catfish, and Scream.

Your music is very introspective and mood enhancing. Where do you find your inspiration?

Most, if not all, of my songs are inspired by the loves in my life. I am happily married, but I don’t think that’s at all obvious from my music. Sometimes imagining the worst helps me appreciate what I have even more.

What’s on tap for SYML in 2017?

There will be some shows and some recording. Some of which is already underway, and I’m really enjoying it.

Finally, a shameless plug ... What would you like our readers to know about you?

I’d like people to know that I am not sad all of the time. But I hope everyone checks out my new music video coming out for “Where’s My Love,” it’s very sad.
