Artist Spotlight: Hundred Handed
L.A.-based pop-rock band, Hundred Handed is Jordan McGraw (guitar and vocals), Matt Black (bass), and Drew Langan (drums); and since the band's inception just a couple of years ago, they've adopted a philosophy of enjoying life to the fullest ... and their music reflects it.
They've been working on new music and are planning to release it in a unique and innovative way this year. We chatted with Jordan McGraw of Hundred Handed about the band's first single, Vibe, which is No. 10 on the WISM chart this week. Their second single, "Celebrate," follows close behind at No. 12.
You worked with some really great songwriters and musicians on “Vibe.” Who contributed and how did you come to work together?
JORDAN: The best part of making "Vibe" was that we got to make it with our friends. The three of us wrote it with Mike Green, with whom we've all worked with in old bands…he’s done about 10 songs with us for Hundred Handed. We co-produced the track with Green and Eddie Jackson, who has worked on just about every song that Drew and I have done since we met. Then Mike brought in Nico Stadi to help build up the track and make that drop super special. That dude, Nico, is a ringer … he can make anything sound special! And finally, our good friend David Bendeth mixed it. Anytime you can get his ear on a record, it's a great thing!
You mentioned that the band had a “turning point” when recording “‘Vibe.” How is your music different now?
JORDAN: When "Vibe" was done, we were able to sit back and finally hear the sound that we’d been hoping to find from the start. "Vibe" just took the fun and the energy to 11!
You’re doing something quite unique in 2017 by introducing a new single and an accompanying video each month through the end of the year. Is everything written and “in the can,” or will you write new material as you go?
JORDAN: The best part about this plan is that we don't have to follow the plan! We have songs in the can and songs ready to come out, but we continue to write and record music every day in our studio. Because of this, we can have full control over the rollout and can move a new song up the list of releases if we like. It really gives us even more of a reason to keep pushing ourselves and keep it all fresh and exciting for us as creators.
The video for “Vibe,” the first in the series of 12, is AWESOME. Will the other 11 videos of the year be just as elaborate?
JORDAN: We’ll have to see! That one was a pretty giant undertaking, without a doubt. When it comes to our videos, our focus is more about how fun they are, rather than the size and scale. I'm sure one of them down the road will just be a compilation of cell phone videos of us being idiots. We’ll probably try to fill an entire room with confetti in another one ... who knows?!
Hundred Handed has such a free-spirited and fun vibe (no pun intended). What is the message you hope to convey to your fans through your music?
JORDAN: Bring on the puns! What's in store for fans? (Pun intended) We just want people to lose the guilt in having too much fun. We want people to dance and laugh and be themselves. If you're having as good of a time listening to our music as we did making it, then we've done our job.
And finally, a shameless plug. What would you like our readers to know about Hundred Handed?
HUNDRED HANDED: Don’t just follow us on our socials ... TALK TO US! Hang out with us! We're here to have a good time, too!
And ... TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS!
