Artist Spotlight: Devon
For singer-songwriter, Devon, it's all about thoughtful lyrics and infectious melodies when making music. Her bright spirit and optimism are reflected in her songs, and you can certainly hear it in her latest single, "Heart," which is at No. 25 on the WISM Current Chart this week.
How old were you when you wrote your first song, and what was it about?
Well, I can’t say for sure when I wrote my very first song, but I do remember being 7 years old and drawing inspiration from the drapes to write a catchy little ditty called, “Blue Curtains.” ☺ In all seriousness though, the first song that I was proud enough to share is the last song on my first album Love and Haight. The song is called “Fate Was Wrong,” and it’s about realizing that not everything is meant to be.
Where do you find inspiration for your songwriting and what’s the process like for you?
I find inspiration in every day! My biggest inspiration is words – when I hear an interesting phrase, I like expanding on it to see what other meanings it can take on. “Fire Flies” and “Reign” from my new album are prime examples of me having too much time on my hands to play with lyrics. My songwriting process typically starts with a phrase or a word, and it builds from there.
If you could invite anyone to sing a duet with you, who would it be and what song would you choose?
I would absolutely love to sing a duet with either Mike Posner or Langhorne Slim! I actually just wrote a new song that would be a really dope duet with either of them (cough, cough - wink, wink - nudge, nudge).
What message do you convey to your fans through your songs?
In life, anything is possible, and good things can come from the strangest of places. You never know when you’ll be able to make a positive difference in someone’s life - I’d like to think I convey a message of positivity through my music. Sure, I write some sad songs, but I think my overall message is one of optimism and of love.
What’s on tap for you for the rest of 2017?
Pinot Grigio ☺ Plus a new album and some gigging in the Northeast. My sophomore album What If I will be coming out towards the end of the summer, and there will be lots of shows so that we can all enjoy the new music together!
