Artist Spotlight: Kim Cameron and Side FX

This week's featured artist has two tracks in rotation with us: "Dancing in the Dark," which is No. 24 and "Burning," which is just getting started in our program. This critically acclaimed Dance artist has been busy performing and promoting her new music but took some time to answer our 5 Questions below where she shares some of her hidden talents!

Meet Kim Cameron & Side FX ...

You are an award-winning artist in the Dance format. What do you love most about the format?

I grew up with all those '80s dance/electronic pioneers – you know, the Thomas Dolby, Thompson Twins, and of course Madonna. When I think about what makes me happy, I am always dancing – either in my kitchen, on the dance floor, poolside, a party or a friend’s house. I hate being sad, so I guess I always gravitate towards music that makes me happy.

Side FX tours heavily across the U.S. What has been your most memorable gig this year and why does it stand out?

Well, performing for the NFL (twice) of course. Something about having 78,000 people watching, listening to you, brings chills up your spine and fills you with unreal energy for about one week after. It was a big high …and still is. Of course, it took two of my nine lives, so I am not sure I need to perform for them again, but I loved every minute.

Your latest release, Entwined is a collection of original music and remixes from other artists. What track on the album is your favorite?

"Dancing in the Dark!" The music video (below) was uber fun to perform in, and the Wideboys – as producers – were just fantastic to work with when I was in the UK. We had a lot of laughing during our creative sessions, and then the magic was flowing inside their small studio. In the middle of nowhere, it felt like we were lighting the skies with our dancing vibes.

“Dancing in the Dark” is doing great on the What’s In-Store Music chart. Can you tell us more about the inspiration for this song?

There are two things about me that are pretty obvious. First, I am, and always will be, a hopeless romantic. Now, I ask you, what could be more romantic than dancing in the dark? Second, I am a nature lover. Because I live on the beach in Miami Beach, we kinda go crazy over the monthly full moons. I mean, we have drum circles on the beach, we sing, we play instruments, do yoga … the whole nine yards. One full moon, I was watching this couple dance in the shadows of the moon. This couple inspired "Dancing in the Dark."

What’s the most exciting part of your job? Also, we understand you do children’s books … tell us about that.

The most exciting and also the most difficult is performing. I know my job is to entertain, so I am always setting the bar high to achieve that simple goal: keep people entertained. Watching people laugh, smile, dance during a performance is the most gratifying experience that I can think of, and I am lucky to be in a position, to asked, to try.

And, yes, I have a book series called It’s written for 5 to 9-year-olds. There are four books so far, but a fifth book is in the works. This is the most fun part of my job. Something about watching little people open their eyes big when you show them a puppet … who stars in their own book … is amazing to watch. I have met about 9,000 kids so far. I hope to quadruple that number next year.

Finally, a shameless plug: What would you like our readers to know about you?

If they have not seen the Dancing in the Dark video (see it below!), then they may not know that I have fallen in love with Aerial dancing. I am about two months away from completing my all-pro routine. It has taken me about four years, but I am just about ready to perform a real show.
