HYLLS is the indie pop project of Nadia Ali, who's best known for her solo career as a vocalist in electronic dance music, collaborating with Starkillers and Alex Kenji; BT and Arty; and Sultan + Shepard. Her new project features the single, "Linger," which is at No. 4 this week on the What's In-Store current chart with 73,054 plays last week.
Your cover of “Linger” is a magnificent tribute and would have made Dolores proud. It was recorded a year before her passing. How did The Cranberries and Dolores O’Riordan influence you and make an impact on you as an artist?
I remember hearing her voice and thinking, "Wow, she makes yodeling sound so cool!" Lyrically, I felt like I could completely connect to the story. Ironically, at first you think the sound might sound hopeful and then you listen to the lyrics and you realize it's a heartbreak song which any teenager can relate to.
You’re releasing your HYLLS album in a very creative and non-traditional way. Can you tell us more about it?
When we were in the studio recording every week, we realized we had more music than we could realistically release in a year and thought, instead of sitting on a computer, why not give fans something consistent to look forward to every month.
Congrats on being nominated for a Juno Award for “Almost Home” with Sultan + Shepard. What were some highlights of the evening?
We loved watching so many talented Canadians perform. There were so many great bands and artists we had never heard of before and it was interesting to see how much Canadians embraced their cultural diversity. It was all about the music and less about the fluff.
If you could collaborate with any musician/artist, living or deceased, who would that be and why?
I would definitely love to record a song with Bono of U2 if I am lucky enough, in my career. He has one of my favorite voices of all time and what an amazing songwriter too.
What other surprises do you have in store for your fans in 2018?
We may have more than one song a month in certain months coming up :)
Finally, a shameless plug: What would you like our readers to know about you?
We tend to write music very quickly and sometimes we can create the entire demo of a song in about an hour's time.
