Artist Spotlight: CC Miles

April 24, 2018

CC Miles is an extraordinary teen. She is a talented singer-songwriter with a drive to make her mark in the music industry. She is poised and wise beyond her years, which gives her a healthy and positive perspective as an up and coming artist. Her singles, "Complete Me" and "Call Me Never" are #11 and #17, respectively, getting thousands of plays in retail locations across the country each week.

What’s the songwriting process like for you? Music or lyrics first? Do you write on guitar or piano?

It depends. I am always writing so when I get a melody or lyric idea that I don’t need right away, I save them for later. So sometimes my songs are inspired by different ideas I have saved up. On the other hand, sometimes I will end up writing a whole new song in twenty minutes and a lot of the time these actually end up being my favorite songs. I write the majority of the lyrics first and then write the music to fit the mood I picture the song to have. I go through phases where I really like writing on guitar, but I have written most of my songs on piano.

Where did you get the inspiration for the songs “Call Me Never” and “Complete Me?”

“Call Me Never” was inspired by my best friend and her relationship. She was always afraid to go out and have fun because her boyfriend was so protective of her. One night she was telling me how she just wasn’t happy anymore and I ended  up writing down the lyrics “I think I’m gonna go out with my friends” and the whole song was written from that. “Complete Me” was inspired by “The Summer I Turned Pretty” books by Jenny Han. I felt really connected to to the books because I go to the beach for the summer and there is a certain feeling you get when you go back there after the winter when you breathe in the air and see everything again for the first time again. It made me think of rekindling an old relationship and how you’re suddenly feeling all the things you felt before all over again.

If you could collaborate with any artist(s) who would you choose and why?

I would probably collaborate with Ed Sheeran because I think he is an amazing song-writer. He has a really unique voice and I love the feeling he brings to his songs.

What has been the most challenging obstacle you’ve faced as a teen in the music industry?

I have no doubt that music is my destination, but determining the best paths to get there has proven to be my most challenging obstacle. I worked to build my social media platforms yet I haven’t obtained as many likes and views as some of the ridiculous cat videos. I am thinking I may need to include my cats in my videos to get people to click on me :). I started performing in bars and I was well received, yet people want to hear cover songs and I want to be a singer-songwriter. I played my original music at coffee shops and other venues near where I live that are receptive to original music, but there is very little attendance at these venues. I recently set my sights on the New York music scene and there appears to be venues that are both receptive to original music and have larger crowds and I hope to continue in this direction. I wish there was a website called tellmeexactlywhattodo.com but like they say, it’s the journey not the destination ... and I am enjoying the journey.

When you’re not playing/writing music, how do you spend your time?

Singing and writing is my favorite thing to do but when I’m not, I love going to concerts with my friends. I also love the beach and hanging out with friends and family in Long Beach Island. I go to high school like every other kid but I am usually writing lyrics instead of writing notes in my notebook during class :)

Finally, a shameless plug: What would you like our readers to know about you?

I want my readers to know that writing a song is like writing in a diary for me. I write about what I’m feeling and what is on my mind that day. Sometimes I have bad days but I have learned that even sadness can be beautiful. As a song-writer I  appreciate everything I am feeling even if I am sad and not having the best day. What I love about writing is that I can turn my pain into art and feel like it means something. I hope that it can make people feel something and that it can inspire them in their lives.
