1.  Please tell us about your songwriting process for the Deep Pocket Thieves and the recording of your new album?

Jimmy: Some of the song progressions come to me in my sleep.  Larea and I get together on start working on each other’s musical thoughts, and a usually a song is born.

Mahlon:  I tend to start with a groove, then the melody and words come to me at the same time.  Then a catchy bass line to go with the groove, and then a hook.  Recording with DPT is fun! Creative! Open minded!  Serious fun with a family on a mission!

Seth:  Fun!  I love the studio and hearing it all come together.  Layering all the percussion is fun, yet challenging.

2. Who are some of your biggest influences?

Larea:  All of the greats including Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Luther Vandross, The Clark Sisters, Stevie Wonder, and so many more.

Jimmy: Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix and Brian Auger

Mahlon:  God, my wife, my musical family, and The Beatles for their songwriting and harmony.

Seth:  Dave Lombardo, Nick Mason, Mike D.

3.  Is there a hidden meaning behind any of your music?

Jimmy: Yes.  Being a cancer survivor, and with all of the conflicts that Larea and I have been through we try to make our music positive.

Larea:  Definitely, there are little bits and pieces taken from real life and real experiences.  Some of mine, some of Jimmy’s.  I lost my husband at 26, and the song “Blue De” has a piece of my soul embedded it.

4. What is your favorite part about this line of work?  Your least favorite?  Why?

Larea:  What I love about being an artist is that every gig is an adventure, and I love dealing with crazy things that happen in impromptu songs and all that fun stuff.  My least favorite is organizing musicians, but I love to be with them when someone else organizes!

Jimmy: Love songwriting and playing live.  Hate loading equipment.

Mahlon:  I enjoy taking the opportunity to explore new things, create, learn, observe, play. I call this “Serious Fun”.  It is not enjoyable when too much thinking or stress gets in the way of creativity.

Sometimes the fun takes a backseat.

5.  If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Jimmy:  One of Larea’s lyrics, “You’re not alone, there’s sunlight after the storm.”

Seth:  Do what you love.
