In the beginning of December 2019, my roommate left to go on tour with his band and it was the first time I was going to be home all by myself for an extended period of time. At first, I was really scared to go 11 days alone but then I actually ended up really enjoying it. I pushed myself to wake up and work on my writing every day as if I were working a 9 to 5. “On Read” was one of the songs that came out of that time period. I was doing an online yoga class and heard these brilliant chords in the background music of the class. I immediately paused the class and knew I had to go write a song. I had been sort of dating this guy for the past few months and he had recently ghosted me. I was pretty hurt by that and I wanted to be petty and write a song about it but then I got nervous that he would know it was about him so I changed the focus to be about “older” men. I also just thought it was a funny topic that hadn’t been written about yet. “On Read” was one of those songs that just flows out of you. I think I wrote it in about ten minutes. But I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I hadn’t spent the week before writing to the extent that I did. So really it was an accumulation of words and melodies I had stored in my subconscious from the previous week.
Dave Audé and I had written a couple songs together prior and I was such a huge fan of his work. He truly is such a creative genius. I really wanted his input on the song and to see if he would be interested in working on it. So, I played it on acoustic guitar and as I was playing it he was throwing out melodical changes and breaks that really transformed the song into what it is now. It was truly magical to watch this song come to life. Dave sent me updated versions of the song as he added more and more production which was very cool. He truly took this song and made it better than I ever thought it could be.
