Artist Spotlight: David Garfield

David Garfield has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Smokey Robinson with whom he co-wrote "I Lied," featuring up and coming artist, Jazelle Paris. The single is No. 50 this week on the What's In-Store Music Currents chart, and you can check out the video below where he and Smokey talk about their songwriting partnership.

You have an impressive and diverse music background as a performer, writer, producer, music director … name five (or more) highlights of your career.

  1. Having Ringo Starr and Steve Perry walk into my recording session and hang out.

  2. Playing the original tonight show and meeting Johnny Carson.

  3. Hanging out with Quincy Jones on stage at Monteux Jazz Festival

  4. Performing “This Masquerade” with George Benson and Leon Russell

  5. Having George Harrison come to attend one of my gigs

  6. Recording with and arranging for Van Morrison

  7. Having Eddie Van Halen perform as a special guest with my band at the ”Baked Potato” in North Hollywood.

Where does your nickname, Creatchy come from?

It’s short for another nickname, “The Creature.” Mike Porcaro (Bassist of Toto) came up with that!

What can you tell us about Jazelle Paris, who is featured on “I Lied,” your single that you co-wrote with Smokey Robinson?

Jazelle is a very talented young writer, singer and producer on the scene here in L.A. She records with many current artists and producers and has toured previously with CeeLo Green.

What projects are you currently working on?

My big project right now is “Outside The Box,” a multi-genre, multi-CD project which is being released over the next two years. I also work as Musical Director and Producer for George Benson and perform all over the world.

If you can go back in time, which years of your career are your fondest and why?

I really enjoyed the '80s a lot here in L.A. The recording business was at its peak and there were so many recording sessions going on all the time and people were writing great fresh material in all genres. It was the hay day for music made by musicians before things went more techno.

Finally, a shameless plug: What would you like our readers to know about you?

I grew up loving great music of all styles and music has been my passion for all of my life. I’ve been so blessed to have worked with and met many of my heroes and have a lifelong career making music!
